Sole trader

The individual carries on the business personally and handles Self Assessment and records as required.

Business partnership

Partners carry on the business together, with a nominated partner and HMRC registration responsibilities.

Limited company

A company is registered with Companies House and has separate filing, governance, accounting, and tax responsibilities.

Other forms

LLPs, social enterprises, charities, and other forms have distinct rules and should not be chosen by analogy alone.

Practical sequence

  1. Decide whether sole trader, partnership, or company is the right starting form.
  2. Choose a compliant business or company name.
  3. Register with HMRC and/or Companies House as the structure requires.
  4. Check VAT, PAYE, licences, data protection, insurance, premises, employment, and sector rules.
  5. Keep the records required for tax and company obligations.
